Caldeirão Verde, From Santana.
Caldeirão Verde is one of Madeira’s signature levada walks — a green amphitheatre of cliff and waterfall reached through tunnels along the Levada do Caldeirão Verde (PR9). From Santana it is a classic day trip; from Casa Keam it is even closer.

Visit Madeira / DRT’s official estimate is about 6 h 30 min; plan a half to full day, roughly 5–7 h with stops. Take a torch for the tunnels; SIMplifica access or parking fees may apply, so check before you go.
Getting There From Santana
Drive a few minutes to Parque Florestal das Queimadas, the usual trailhead. Park, start on the levada path, and follow the water channel inland. The walk is moderate: long but not technical, with tunnels that need a torch or phone light. The official estimate is about 6 h 30 min, so allow roughly 5–7 h with stops for the out-and-back if you want time at the waterfall without rushing.
What the Walk Feels Like
You move under tree canopy beside a narrow irrigation channel, then into rock-cut tunnels and out again to sheer green walls. Caldeirão Verde itself is a circular basin where the stream drops into a pool — cool, loud, and worth the damp jacket. Wear shoes with grip; the levada edge can be slick. Pack a light rain shell; the mountains make their own weather. Keep voices low in the tunnels so everyone can hear the water.
Pair It With a Quiet Night Above the Village
After Queimadas, most day-trippers queue south. Guests at Casa Keam roll back up the hill for the gym, firepit, or terrace instead — same hike, shorter logistics. The next morning PR1.1 is still across the street if you want a second trail day without moving hotels.
Timing Tips
Start earlier on weekends and holidays when Queimadas parking fills. Midweek mornings are usually quieter. If cloud is thick at the trailhead, the levada can still be walkable under the canopy while the high peaks stay socked in — useful when you are based nearby and can try again the next day. Santana’s thatched houses and theme park sit a few minutes downhill if someone in the group wants a lighter afternoon after the waterfall.
